About UtilitySmith

UtilitySmith is a collection of free, browser-based file utilities — tools for images, PDFs, and document processing that run entirely in your browser without uploading your files anywhere.

It was built out of frustration with the existing options. Most online tools in this space share the same pattern: they upload your files to their servers, show you an ad while you wait, cap what you can do on the free tier, and make you create an account to download your own file. That works for the business model. It is not good for the user.

The things UtilitySmith does differently:

  • Client-side processing. Every tool uses browser APIs — Canvas, WebAssembly, WebWorkers — to process files locally. No server receives your files. This isn't a privacy statement, it's how the software works.
  • No account required. Open a tool, use it, close it. There's nothing to sign up for because there's nothing to store.
  • Free, with no artificial limits. There's no “5 files per day” cap or a paid tier for batch processing. If the tool can do it, you can do it.

The plan is a growing set of tools in this category — things you need occasionally, can't be bothered to install software for, and shouldn't have to hand your files to a stranger to do. Watermarking, compression, format conversion, OCR, PDF editing — and more in the workshop.

UtilitySmith was built and is run by a single developer. It's a small site; the quality bar for each tool is deliberately high precisely because there aren't dozens of them.
