Why WebP beats PNG for the web

PNG is lossless and excellent for precision — but for web images, that precision comes at a cost. WebP achieves similar visual quality in files that are typically 25–35% smaller than PNG, and 30–40% smaller than JPG. All modern browsers support WebP natively, making it the practical choice for anyone publishing images online.

WebP also supports transparency (like PNG) and animation (like GIF), so switching from PNG to WebP for web use is almost always a straight upgrade in file size with no feature trade-offs. The main caveat is older image editing apps — if you need to open the file in Photoshop or print it, stick with PNG.

Common questions

Does WebP support transparency?
Yes. If your PNG has a transparent background, it is preserved when converting to WebP.
Do all browsers support WebP?
All modern browsers (Chrome, Firefox, Safari 14+, Edge) support WebP. It's safe for any website targeting current browsers.
Can I get lossless WebP?
Set quality to 100% for near-lossless output. True lossless WebP (bit-for-bit identical) requires a different encoder; this tool uses OffscreenCanvas which applies minimal compression at 100%.
